I’ve posted a lot about the Hamilton Air show happening Father’s Day weekend, June 18th and 19th so I thought I would mention some other air shows in the Southern Ontario area that I have on my radar for this summer. In (a somewhat) chronological order, here they are.
- Wings and Wheels Heritage Festival
- Great Lakes International Air Show
- Waterloo Air Show
- Rotary Brantford Charity Air Show
- The Canadian International Air Show
As the banner above (which links to the show website) states, the show takes place June 24-26th in St. Thomas, Ontario.
Aircraft highlights at this show for me are:
- The Snowbirds (performing)
- CF-18 Hornet (performing)
- Avro Lancaster (performing)
- C-130 Hercules (static display)
- A-10 Thunderbolt (invited for static display)
You can find a full and more up to date list of performers, static display aircraft and more on the Aircraft and Attractions page. This is the first year I know of this show and it looks pretty amazing. I’ve flown into St. Thomas airport on one of my training flights and it was a lot of fun. I am hoping to be able to get a day off from work during the weekend to be able to attend this show.
The flying display is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday from 13:00 EST – 16:30 EST. You can also follow the air show on Twitter @GLIAS2011. Tickets can be purchased on the GLIAS 2011 website or at the gate. If you would like to volunteer for the airshow check out their volunteer opportunities and get in touch with the coordinators.
This air show’s website is not as informative as the one belonging to GLIAS, however it does give you the option to subscribe to an email newsletter. The show is slated to take place August 20th and 21st at the Region of Waterloo International Airport (CYKF).
I had the opportunity to volunteer at this air show last year and it was great fun! This year the show has a number of exciting acts lined up including:
- CF-18 Hornet
- Skyhawks Parachute Team
- USAF F-16
The Waterloo air show is not on Twitter, however you can find the Waterloo airport at @FlyYKF and those in charge of this account were tweeting about the show last year. I’ve signed up for the show’s newsletter and will update with more details as they become available.
This is an air show that I have been meaning to attend for the last two years. It usually takes place on the first Wednesday of September (last year it was September 1st) at the Brantford Municipal Airport (CYFD). The same airport where I am currently training.
The show website has not been updated yet for this year’s performers but you can get an idea of the calibre of acts you can expect to see by checking out the information available about last year’s show. As with GLIAS above, they are always looking for volunteers so if you have some time to spare fill out the volunteer form.
The Canadian International Airshow takes place as a closing ceremony for the Canadian National Exhibition. It takes place on the shore of Lake Ontario with airplanes taking off from the Toronto Island Airport.
I attended this show last year and it was a lot of fun. There was a good combination of vintage and new aircraft including:
- USAF F-16
- B25 Mitchell
- C17 Globemaster (AMAZING!)
I will be following the show website to get more information about scheduled performances at this year’s airshow which is slated for September 3rd, 4th and 5th, 2011.
So there you have it: four air shows, one for basically each month of the summer. If you have information about other air shows happening please let me know and leave information about them in the comments. I will make another post once I have info about at least 2-3 more shows.
